Military Skills Development System (MSDS) stipend
The Military Skills Development System is the standard entry route into the SANDF. It is a two-year voluntary programme for South Africans aged 18 to 26 (or up to 26 with a degree). During training you earn a stipend of about R8 000 to R10 000 per month, with free accommodation, meals, uniforms and medical care. On successful completion, top performers may be offered a permanent contract at salary level 4 (Rifleman) or higher.
SANDF ranks and how pay grows
The SANDF uses a rank structure across all four branches, running from enlisted ranks (Private or equivalent, Corporal, Sergeant), through non-commissioned and warrant officers, up to commissioned officers (Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Colonel) and the general ranks. Pay rises at each level, and promotion depends on available posts, qualifications, performance and experience.
Allowances and benefits
Beyond the basic salary, SANDF members receive a housing allowance, medical care through the SA Military Health Service (SAMHS), pension contributions, danger and deployment pay for hazardous or border duties, a uniform allowance and a travel allowance. Specialised roles such as pilots and engineers earn higher pay.
How to join the SANDF
The main entry route is the MSDS intake, advertised each year (usually around March to June) on the Department of Defence website and in newspapers. You generally need a matric, South African citizenship, to be aged 18 to 26, a clean criminal record, and to meet medical and physical fitness standards. Be aware that the SANDF never charges an application fee, so anyone asking for money is running a scam. For related uniformed pay, see our SAPS salaries and ranks and correctional services salary guides, and compare all jobs in our South African salary guide.
How we worked this out
The figures on this page are estimates based on public-sector pay scales, salary survey data and SANDF recruitment information for 2026. Military pay follows the DPSA salary levels and varies by rank, branch and allowances, so treat these as guide ranges and confirm the figure with the Department of Defence or in the specific intake advert.
