South Africa’s demerit points system starts recording from 1 September 2026. Tick the traffic offences below to see how many demerit points you would carry, how close that is to a licence suspension, and how long it would take to clear.

Educational estimate. Points come from AARTO Schedule 3 and can change as the schedule is finalised. Some speeding points vary by zone (the values shown are for a 60 km/h urban zone). This tool does not access your real record – check official notices at aarto.co.za or the RTIA.

How the demerit system works

  • Everyone starts on 0 points. Each offence adds 1 to 6 points once the fine is paid or an enforcement order is issued.
  • A full licence is suspended at more than 15 points. A learner’s licence is suspended at more than 6.
  • Over the limit means 3 months suspension for every point above the threshold (e.g. 17 points = 6 months).
  • Points drop by 1 every 3 months of offence-free driving, until you reach zero.
  • Your licence can be suspended twice. A third time and it is cancelled – you start again with a learner’s licence.
