How SAPS salaries work

SAPS pay is set by rank and notch, not by the standard public service salary levels. Officers are placed in bands (A to D), and within each band there are notches. You start on the lowest notch of your rank and move up a notch each year for satisfactory performance. You only jump to a higher pay bracket when you are promoted to the next rank.

Police pay is negotiated through the Safety and Security Sectoral Bargaining Council (SSSBC), and adjusted each year in line with government wage agreements.

SAPS constable salary

A constable is the entry rank after academy training. The official scale places a constable at about R226 188 per year (around R18 849 per month) at the lowest notch, with a practical entry range of about R16 000 to R21 000 per month depending on qualifications and placement.

Before that, during the Basic Police Development Learning Programme, recruits receive a training stipend of about R4 500 per month, then a probation salary of around R18 000 per month once placed.

SAPS sergeant salary

A sergeant supervises constables and assists in investigations. Sergeants earn roughly R23 000 to R32 000 per month, depending on notch and allowances. Promotion from constable to sergeant usually needs at least 3 years’ service and a satisfactory performance rating, though in practice it can take longer because of the post structure.

SAPS warrant officer salary

A warrant officer is a senior non-commissioned officer who manages units and mentors junior members. Warrant officers earn about R29 000 to R42 000 per month, making this one of the more commonly searched ranks because so many long-serving members hold it.

SAPS captain salary

A captain is a commissioned officer who leads a unit and manages operations. Captains earn around R43 000 to R60 000 per month, depending on notch, unit and allowances.

SAPS salary scale 2026 (full rank ladder)

The full rank ladder, from junior to senior, is: Constable, Sergeant, Warrant Officer, Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel, Brigadier, Major General, Lieutenant General, and National Commissioner (General) at the top. Pay rises at each step, and the most senior generals earn well over R100 000 a month.

Allowances and benefits

SAPS pay is more than the basic salary. Members typically receive a housing allowance (about R1 320 a month for those not in official accommodation), a risk allowance for the nature of the work, and role allowances such as detective or firearm allowances that can add R1 500 to R5 000 a month. Officers also contribute to the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF), one of the most valuable benefits in public service, and have medical aid support and strong job security.

How to earn more in SAPS

Pay grows in two ways: annual notch progression within your rank, and promotion to the next rank, which brings a bigger jump. Specialised units and role allowances also lift earnings.
